See Cuba by bike and raise money for Catch22 in the process...
Cuba is the Caribbean's largest and least commercialised island and one of the world's last bastions of communism. We will spend five days cycling along quiet roads passing towns and villages that seem frozen in time. There is barely any traffic, just a few horse and carts and tractors.
About the Challenge
The Cuba Challenge takes place between 26 February and 5 March 2012.
Highlights of the ride include the Bay of Pigs, famous for US aggression on Cuba in 1961; Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the Sierra del Escambray mountains; Santa Clara with its statue of the legendary Che Guevara and the captivating city of Havana which boasts spacious plazas and glorious Spanish architecture.
- DAY 1: Fly London to Havana
- DAY 2: Transfer to Bay of Pigs. Cycle through Zapata Peninsula National Park and small country villages to Bermejas or Yaguaramos. Transfer to Cienfuegos. 42km
- DAY 3: Follow undulating coastal road, taking in stunning views of the Escambray mountains to Trinidad. 100km
- DAY 4: Circular ride in area around Trinidad followed by tour of Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Transfer to Topes de Collantes. 83km
- DAY 5: Mountainous peaks through pine trees and eucalyptus to Hanabanilla, in the foothills of the Escambray Mountains. 70km
- DAY 6: Some long hills towards the finish line at the Che Guevara Monument in Santa Clara. Transfer to Havana. 60km
- DAY 7: Free time to explore Havana. Celebratory meal.
- DAY 8: More free time in Havana before flight Havana to London.
- DAY 9: Arrive London.
To take part you will need to raise £2,500, deposit of £250. You will get support from Catch22 Fundraising Team to raise sponsorship, as well as training tips and training days. You will need to be prepared to train, the cycling is not for the elite but a decent level of fitness would help.
This challenge will be managed by our travel partners at Classic Tours, a company with over 20 years of experience in managing overseas challenges for charities.
