A Sensible Approach

Nacro Policy Manager Jackie Lowthian is supporting Justice Secretary Ken Clarke’s suggestion that millions could be saved from the prisons budget by jailing fewer offenders and cutting sentences.

She says: “In a time of austerity when the government need to ensure they are getting value for money, we need to take sensible and practical approach to spending on criminal justice.

“Prison is expensive and ineffective at reducing reoffending. Prison resources should be reserved for serious offenders who present a danger to the public. Nearly 60% of people on short term sentences reoffend within a year costing the taxpayer over £10 billion.

“People clearly want to feel that offenders are being punished but unless the punishment also has some impact on reducing reoffending then it is an expensive waste of money.

“Our experience shows that investment in prevention and community based sentences are far more effective and financially viable way to reduce crime and protect communities.”
