ACPO comment on Domestic Abuse

Commenting on reports of proposals to ban domestic abuse perpetrators from drinking, an ACPO spokesperson said:

“As ACPO lead on domestic abuse, Brian Moore, Chief Constable of Wiltshire Police, has been asked by the Home Secretary to undertake a review into what additional powers police and courts may need to control violent perpetrators - particularly serial offenders who move between relationships.

“Alcohol is not a cause of domestic violence, but is a significant aggravating factor, playing a part in an estimated 40% of all domestic violence incidents that the police are called to. In our determination to tackle these crimes and protect those who are vulnerable we are prepared to consider any ideas that may be put forward. Any solutions adopted must be both proportionate and practicable. Nothing is ruled in or out at this stage and in the search for solutions we welcome public debate on how to combat the horrific crime of domestic abuse and bring its perpetrators to justice.”
