Budget changes to housing benefit will damage young people

Changes to housing benefit set out in the Chancellor's budget, could damage many young people and lead to them becoming estranged from their families.

Catch22's recent research shows that almost two thirds of young people (65%) see affordable housing is in their top three priorities for public spending. Measures to cap housing benefit, remove the guarantee of appropriate sized accommodation and limit the length of time housing benefit will be paid, will have far-reaching impacts for young people struggling with adult life.

Joyce Moseley, Catch22 Chief Executive says:

'We all knew that this Budget would be tough but the Government seems to have ignored some of the most vulnerable young people

Young people want to be independent adults with a job, a home and a stable future. Now, those who are already most likely to struggle - the poorest, those leaving care and those from chaotic backgrounds – will now face having their help cut off when they need it the most.'
