The Keppel Unit, a new space for young people with learning and behavioural needs at HMYOI Wetherby in West Yorkshire, is scheduled to open in October 2008.
The Keppel Unit, which is funded by the Youth Justice Board (YJB) will provide an enhanced level of support to 48 young men (aged 15 to 17) who have had difficulties engaging with the standard regime within young offender institutions. It will offer more targeted education, training opportunities and dedicated healthcare, enabling them to participate fully in the rehabilitation work available.
The new unit is part of the YJB's 10-year strategy for the secure estate which focuses on improving rehabilitation work in custody in order to help reduce reoffending.
