Nacro opens new centre for unemployed teens

Nacro has opened a brand new centre in Burton-on-Trent, providing education and training for local teenagers who are unemployed or at risk of school exclusion.

The centre consists of state-of-the-art workshops for practical courses such as plumbing and construction alongside classrooms for numeracy and literacy. They will work with around thirty-five young people at any one time, aged 14 -19.

There will be two courses on offer at the centre. Firstly, the Foundation Learning course aimed at young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET).

Secondly, the Nacro Moves schools programme, which offers alternative education to young people who have either been excluded from school, or are at risk of becoming so.

Nacro previously ran its local project from a centre on Hawkins lane in Burton.

Nacro centre manager Jenny Harvey says the new home is much needed: “By moving here we can now provide practical training in areas like construction, which just wasn’t possible before.”

“The work Nacro does creating opportunities for young people in Staffordshire and Derbyshire is incredibly important. We stop young people from getting into trouble and to help those who have, turn their lives around.”

At the launch event, Nacro handed out certificates to all the young people who have gained qualifications with the charity in the last year.

The majority of them will be continuing their studies at Burton College in September.
