Nacro Take to the Streets of Wakefield

Nacro are working with Police in Wakefield to tackle anti social behaviour and the problem of young people drinking on the streets.

It’s part of a project called Streetsafe, in which Nacro are teaming up with police and council youth workers. They will be patrolling key areas where young people usually spend their free time.

As part of the Streetsafe team, Nacro project wrokers will speak to the young people letting them know about the positive activities and facilities available in the local area.

The aim of the project is to engage young people and try to help them understand the harm alcohol can cause. As well as cutting crime the project will offer realistic alternatives to hanging out on the street and getting into trouble.

Inspector Helen Brear, of Wakefield Rural Neighbourhood Police Team says,"We want them to tell us what they think about issues in the area and will encourage them to join a youth citizen panel in areas in which they live."

Nacro project worker Natalie Delaney, says: "Nacro youth workers and the Police have already had success in delivering the street based teams in the Castleford and Central areas of Wakefield, letting the young people know about positive things they can be involved with along with providing them with information, advice and guidance. We look forward to starting this successful project in a new area, Wakefield Rural.”
