The new public sector prison under construction on the former site of RAF Coltishall will be called HMP Bure, Justice Secretary Jack Straw has announced.
Named after the local river, the choice was selected following public consultation with the local authority.
The river Bure is a tributory to the nearby Norfolk Broads and runs through the prison's neighbouring towns of Aylsham, Coltishall and Wroxham.
HMP Bure will be a Category C establishment for male convicted prisoners and is due to open in November 2009.
