Response to the Review of the YJB’s Governance and Operating Arrangements

A review of the YJB has today been published, Jack Straw, Justice Secretary, and Ed Balls, Children’s Secretary, announced.

Frances Done, Chair of the YJB, said:

“We warmly welcome this review. It confirms that the Youth Justice Board has played a key role in the achievement of major improvements in the approach to preventing youth crime, reducing reoffending and dealing with young offenders in custody.

“In the past twelve years, those working in the youth justice system have made remarkable progress. However, we recognise that we are working in an ever changing environment and we are determined to provide the clear leadership and direction needed and to prioritise both public protection and strong support for young people.

“The Review’s recommendations provide us with considered advice on how to deliver further improvement in the next phase of the board’s existence including the achievement of better value for money.

“In addressing the recommendations we intend to work closely with partners both national and local, strengthening our relationship with local services beyond youth offending teams, especially children’s services to achieve better outcomes for young people and make local communities safer."

The review, and the written ministerial statement, are available to read and download from the Department for Children, Schools and Families website [opens in new window].
