Young people at Nacro's Discus project in Openshaw, Manchester had the ear of the monarchy when HRH The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex visited on Friday 28th March.
Prince Edward met the staff, volunteers and young people who take part in a variety of activities at the Cuthbert Centre, including the incredibly successful Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme and the youth inclusion projects.
Prince Edward was visiting in his capacity as trustee of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme. He is also a Gold Award holder himself.
After a tour of the centre Prince Edward was introduced to a number of young people and volunteers including:
-
Duke of Edinburgh's Award volunteers;
-
Young people planning a canoeing expedition to Ireland as part of their DofE Silver Award;
-
Young people involved in the "Bike Right" cycling workshop who are learning about cycling proficiency and bicycle maintenance in preparation for a cycling expedition to Ireland as part of their DofE Silver Award.
Nacro's Discus project was established in 2000. As well as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, Discus involves youth inclusion projects and family support projects. All of these projects are designed to engage disadvantaged children and young people at risk of offending behaviour through positive activities. The projects work with people from all across Manchester and areas of Greater Manchester.
Commenting after the visit, Paul Cavadino, Chief Executive of Nacro, said:
"This has been a fantastic opportunity for our staff, volunteers and young service users to showcase their excellent work.
"Nacro's Discus project works with many disadvantaged and marginalised young people and families to help them turn their lives around.
"It has been a real boost to them to know that Prince Edward is interested in coming to hear about their stories and achievements."
Robert Johnston, North West Regional Director of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, added:
"Nacro runs an outstanding Duke of Edinburgh's Award project and everyone involved deserved the chance to show off their hard work to Prince Edward.
"As a Gold Award holder himself, Prince Edward was able to share some of the excitement and challenges that the young people on Nacro's Discus project are experiencing."
