How do judges decide on sentences for those convicted of crimes? Which factors should be borne in mind as they reach their verdict?
As part of the ongoing series on criminal justice, Radio 4’s Today programme took a number of listeners and a serving judge through the sentencing process for a persistent offender convicted of criminal damage.
The Ministry of Justice has itself developed an interactive tool to help explain sentencing. You Be the Judge allows web users to hear the details of an offence, consider the appropriate sentence and then see how their judgement compares with that of the actual sentencer.
Have they been convicted before? Did they plead guilty? Did they show genuine remorse?
Users will have to consider these factors and others when reaching their verdict.
