In this dissertation, newspaper articles from The Sun which negatively portrayed the police in their detections of and investigations into burglary were analysed using qualitative content analysis to discover the themes that made such news stories newsworthy. The themes were found to be burglary-specific information, police response to burglary, the actions of individual officers, the outcome of burglary, the justice system and issues raised by burglary for the political agenda. A large number of reasons were also found to answer the question of why it was that the themes and the categories within them made such news stories newsworthy when they were situated within the context of and related to the existing literature on the news media, the police and crime.
